Project
The M5 junction 12 near Gloucester experiences heavy queuing on the off slips during peak periods, often tailing back onto the main carriageway. To improve safety, particularly during winter hours with reduced visibility, the offslips were extended by converting the hard shoulder to an auxiliary lane and queue activated warning signs were installed beside the main M5 carriageways approaching the junction.
Commencing on the 2nd of October 2006, the improvement work was carried out during off peak hours to avoid disruption to the public. The new VMS signs were activated on Saturday the 28th of October - in time for the Monday morning traffic peak following the change to the winter time clock.
