What are we doing?
The Highways Agency will be carrying out major maintenance work on the A556 between the A50 (Mere Crossroads) and the M6 (Junction 19).
Improvements will also be made to the round-about and slip roads.
When are we doing the work?
We plan to start work in November 2006 and finish in March 2007.
Why are we doing it?
The road is suffering from wear and tear and needs essential maintenance. We are also taking the opportunity to improve the traffic lights at M6 Junction 19.
We are going to:
- Reconstruct and resurface the road using a quieter surfacing material.
- Reconstruct and resurface the footpaths and accesses.
- Replace the damaged highway drainage pipes.
- Replace the lighting columns.
- Replace the road signs.
- Renew the safety fences at Junction 19.
- Upgrade the traffic lights by installing a more intelligent traffic light system.
What are the benefits?
When the work is finished, the benefits will include:
- A quieter road because of the new low-noise surfacing.
- Reduced congestion on the route.
- Improved safety for road users and pedestrians due to:
- New road signs.
- New safety fencing.
- Improved footpaths and accesses.
- Improved signals at M6 Junction 19.
