The Project
The A14 Trunk Road is a route of national and European strategic importance, connecting the east coast ports of Felixstowe and Harwich with the Midlands and the North. The new road is approx 4km in length. It starts at Haughley New Street and follows a route just to the south of the former A14.
It travels adjacent to the old A14 towards Stowmarket where a new all access grade-separated junction has been built between Fishponds Way and the former Stowmarket junction, where the scheme ends. A bridge has been built under the new road near the Quarries Cross Junction, to provide access to settlements to the south of the A14.
The substandard alignment and the locations of the junctions with local roads meant that the visibility along this section of the A14 was poor, and it had a poor safety record. The new road will improve safety, reduce travelling time and lead to more reliable journeys.
Construction of the scheme was partly funded by the European Union as part of the Trans European Road network.
One Year After Opening study
As part of our ongoing programme of Post Opening Project Evaluation (POPE) this scheme has been reviewed at one year after opening. The study compares the outturn effects of this scheme to the predicted impacts.
