Project
Work has begun on a £11million communications upgrade project within Hampshire on the M275/A27/A3(M).
New variable message signs, and emergency telephones will be installed. The signs will be able to display pictures, as well as text. This will provide drivers with better information about incidents and conditions on the road ahead.
When complete, a new incident detection system will identify queuing traffic and automatically activate signals to warn approaching vehicles of a hazard. Drivers will be able to slow down in time, reducing further incidents, and consider alternative routes which will help cut congestion. Similar schemes in the UK have reduced the number of injury accidents by 13 per cent.
The project is due to be completed by March 2008.
Traffic Management
When planning road projects we ensure that the programme of work causes the least amount of disruption. In this case, we are unable to carry out all the works during the daytime as the impact on traffic would be too severe. Any lane closures required on the M275, A27 A3(M) will be undertaken at night with additional day time lane closures on the A3(M) being undertaken as required. Hard-shoulder closures will be allowed during day and nightime hours.
Benefits
In summary, the benefits of this scheme include:
- Creating more reliable journeys
- Improving road safety
- Reducing congestion
