The Project

The widening works to junction 30 of the M5 in Exeter and lighting upgrade between junctions 29 and 30, were completed both on time and on budget.

The slip road widening required over 22,000 cubic metres of sandstone to be excavated to provide width for the additional lanes, with over 50% of arisings retained on site in order to minimise the effect of the works on the environment. A large number of existing trees were also retained, helping to reduce the visual impact of the works.

Over 3km of concrete step barrier was installed in the central reserve to replace the existing steel safety fencing. The new central reserve lighting columns, which replaced the existing catenary lighting layout, were mounted on concrete plinths between the two runs of concrete barrier.

In addition, signage was either replaced and/or upgraded and damaged sections of carriageway were resurfaced.

Apart from some overnight closures to carry out road marking works, Junction 30 remained open throughout the duration of the works. The lighting upgrade was completed using lane closures and a temporary reduction in the speed limit, during which time SPECS safety cameras were in operation.
