Bridge Construction
Bridge Construction
To widen this section of the M1 we need to replace 7 over-bridges with new wider structures. To minimise inconvenience to motorists as much as possible we will construct the new bridge beams alongside the existing structures.
To do this traffic is restricted at night, to one running lane and the actual beam erection is carried out under a Police rolling block. This provides a safe working area and somewhere to site the crane and new bridge beams prior to the lift. A Police patrol vehicle will slow traffic down well in advance of the works area giving the bridge erection teams approximately 15 to 20 minutes to lift the beams into position. Traffic is then released and if required a further rolling block can be implemented to finally position beams and bolt them onto their supports.
When the bridges are ready we will divert side roads and footpaths onto the new bridges and open to traffic, the old bridge will then be closed and demolished.
It is inevitable that this work will cause delays to your journeys. Before starting your journey it would be advisable that you check the current road conditions by using the Highways Agency website, Highways Agency information line (HAIL) and Traffic Link for up to date information. The contact information for these can be found on the main Highways Agency home page.
We thank you for your patience whilst we carry out this work.
Further information on specific junction closures and diversions can be found on the Roadworks Information page.
