The Project
Work is substantially complete on the £14.2 million communications upgrade project on both carriageways of the M1 from Junction 13 to 13km north of Junction 14 (Northamptonshire Border).
New electronic message signs and signalling have been installed which will provide drivers with better information about incidents and conditions on the road ahead. The already installed incident detection system will identify queuing traffic and automatically activate the new signals to warn approaching vehicles of slow moving or stationary vehicles. This will allow drivers to slow down , reducing further incidents, and consider alternative routes which will help cut congestion. Similar schemes in the UK have reduced the number of secondary injury accidents by 13 per cent.
The construction was carried out by Edmund Nuttall Ltd and supervised by Atkins Odlin Consulting Engineers.
