Project
Two bridge replacements have been completed between junctions 2 and 3 of the M3 - near to Chobham in Surrey. Both the Brickhill and Strandways bridges were demolished overnight 28-29 October. The replacement bridges were installed overnight 9-11 December 2006.
The new bridges have improved safety by providing further headroom clearance on the motorway. They are also be wider than the old bridges, which will benefit those who use them.
Traffic Management
The maintenance works mainly involved hard shoulder closures on the M3, with some overnight lane closures. The installation of the new bridges, however, required a full overnight closure on 9 December of the M3 between junctions 2 and 3 - as happened with the demolition of the old bridges recently.
This was necessary to provide a safe environment for both our workforce and the traveling public. Drivers were required to follow a signed diversion route during this closure (please see diversion map).
Opening Event
The media were invited to an opening ceremony at the Strandways bridge which was held on Monday 18 December. Ponies and riders from the local Bisley Riding Club were also in attendance.
