The Project

The A34 Chilton Major Maintenance Scheme began in January 2007 and was completed on 28th March 2007. This section of the Highways Agency network was originally built in 1974 and required major maintenance to keep the carriageway in a safe and serviceable condition for the travelling public.

Completing the major maintenance work within the set time frame involved a combination of 24hr and overnight work.  Throughout the scheme there were north and southbound lane closures with a contraflow in operation (a full closure of one carriageway with a single lane running in each direction on the other carriageway).  During some stages of the works there were closures of entry and exit slip roads with diversionary routes in operation.

In order to ensure the safety of the Highways Agency workforce and the travelling public, a 40mph speed limit was enforced throughout the length of the scheme.  A free recovery service was provided to prevent congestion if a driver's vehicle broke down at any point throughout the works.

The successfully completed major maintenance scheme will ensure that this stretch of the A34 will remain safe and serviceable for future road users, whilst providing a smoother quieter surface for users and local residents.
