Blyth Junction Improvement
Background
Work we are carrying out to improve the existing Blyth roundabout (A614/B6045) on the A1 commenced in September 2006. This work is part of the £84 million improvement project to upgrade six roundabouts on the A1 between Blyth and Peterborough to two-level junctions.
We are upgrading Blyth roundabout to a new two-level junction, which will improve safety and ease congestion by separating A1 traffic from local traffic.
Why is the improvement needed?
Blyth roundabout has a poor accident record with 24 accidents in the past 5 years. Additionally, the roundabout suffers frequently from congestion and lengthy delays during peak hours.
What will the new improvements consist of?
We will replace the existing roundabout with a two-level junction. The two-level junction will carry the A614 and B6045 over the A1, which will be lowered substantially. We will provide new on and off slip roads to new small roundabouts on either side of the A1, which will be connected by a new over-bridge. We will close the existing entrance to Moto and provide a new single entrance and exit point on the new eastern roundabout. We will move the road to Haworth further north along the A614.
