Apleyhead Junction Improvement
Background
Work we are carrying out to improve the existing Apleyhead roundabout (known locally as Five Lane Ends) on the A1 commenced in September 2006. This work is part of the £84 million improvement project to upgrade six roundabouts on the A1 between Blyth and Peterborough to two-level junctions.
We are upgrading Apleyhead roundabout to a new two-level junction, which will improve safety and ease congestion by separating A1 traffic from local traffic.
Why is the improvement needed?
Apleyhead roundabout (A57/A614) has a poor accident record with 25 accidents in the past 5 years. Additionally, the roundabout suffers frequently from congestion and lengthy delays during peak hours.
What will the new improvements consist of?
We will replace the existing roundabout with a new two-level junction. We will construct a new dual carriageway for the A1 in the fields on the east side of the existing A1. We will also construct new southbound on and off slip roads, a linking roundabout, an over-bridge and link roads in these fields to the existing Apleyhead roundabout. This will enable us to minimise disruption to A1 traffic during construction of the new junction.
We will re-utilise parts of the existing A1 main carriageway for the new northbound slip roads. In addition to this, existing cross-over points and gaps in the central reserve will be removed. On completion of the works we will have formed a new dumb-bell shaped junction.
