The Project
Overnight work took place on two railway bridges over the M25 at Merstham near junction 7 in Surrey, between Sunday 24 December 2006 and Wednesday 3 January 2007. The work needed lane restrictions on the motorway for safety reasons.
The work took place between Christmas and New Year from 10 pm to 7 am, when traffic flows were at their lowest, and were taken off at 05.30 am on the mornings of Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 January 2007.
Part of the work involved putting up scaffolding which required access from the M25. In order to provide a safe working area, there were lane closures and temporary speed restrictions in place throughout the works.
Traffic Management
A 50 mph speed limit was in place on the clockwise carriageway of the M25 as well as on the M23-M25 slip road joining the clockwise M25 carriageway. There were no restrictions on the anti-clockwise carriageway.
With the scaffolding in place, work to the bridges continued day and night during January and February without disrupting drivers on the M25.
Work to put up scaffolding on the Merstham Railway Bridges was completed on Monday 8th January 2007. The scaffolding was taken down during night-time lane closures in spring 2007 and all works were completed in June 2007.
