The Project
The traffic signal controlled junction between the A456 Birmingham Road and the A491 Stourbridge Road did not have any pedestrian crossing phases and also suffered from a lack of queuing space for right turning vehicles from the A491 into the A456.
This scheme has introduced pedestrian crossing facilities across both the A456 and A491 approaches together with additional lane capacity on the Stourbridge Road approach.
Traffic Management
Works requiring traffic management were undertaken during daytime off peak hours (0930 - 1530). Occasionally for the safety of the workforce there may have been a need to carry out some works such as resurfacing during nightime hours (2100 - 0500) to minimise traffic delays.
There were lane closures and turning restrictions at the A456 (Stourbridge Road / A491 Birmingham Road) junction at Hagley near Stourbridge to enable engineers to upgrade the traffic signals, provide pedestrian crossing facilities at each part of the junction, and make additional queuing space for vehicles approaching from Stourbridge.
Right turn movements were banned at certain times during the work. When the right turn from Stourbridge (towards Kidderminster) was banned, vehicles had to turn left towards Birmingham and U-turn at the Hagley Hill / Wassell Grove roundabout; when the right turn from Birmingham (towards Stourbridge) was banned, vehicles continued along the A456 towards Kidderminster and U-turn at the Kidderminster Road roundabout. The diversion routes were clearly signposted.
