The Project
The scheme is a major maintainence project for the Junction 24 of the M1 at a cost of £1.1M.
The work will take place over a period of 10 weeks, beginning on the 15th January 2007. All work will be carried out at night between the hours of 9pm and 6am.
The scheme comprises:
- Bituminous Inlays to depths of 50 and 100mm,
- Replacement of defective ironwork,
- Application of High Friction Surfacing,
- Replacement of damaged precast concrete kerbs,
- Improvements to the drainage system,
- Replacement of Traffic Signs, replacement of road markings and detector loops.
To facilitate safe working, lane closures will be in place on most nights. On some nights, connections to the roundabout will be closed, clearly signed diversion routes will be in place.

Details of the Scheme
The works are situated at Junction 24 of the M1 motorway, and also include various sections of the A453, A6, A50 and M1 slip roads adjacent to the island.
The works have now been extended to cover a section of the M1 southbound from Junction 24 to 23a The contract involves inlay works, anti-skid, roadmarkings, loop cutting, drainage and sign revisions.
The scheme started on Monday 15 January 2007 and is due for completion on Tuesday 13 March 2007. (Note revised completion date)
Any slip road closures required will be in sequence clockwise from the north east around to the north west. Only one slip road will be closed at any one time and diversion routes will be clearly signed. The M1 and A50 will be used as alternative routes where possible.
Works will only be carried out at night-times, generally between 9:00 pm to 6:00 am.
A temporary 30 mph speed limit will be in place at all times (24/7) during the contract due to temporary road surfaces, markings etc…

Note that the majority of the works from Friday 9 March onwards consist of anti-skid application, installation of road markings and inductive loop cutting and as such are very weather dependent.
