The Project
The viaduct carries an elevated section of the M5 over the roundabout at Junction 2. A bridge strike has deflected the bottom flange of the outer beam on the southern side of the interchange and this has locally reduced the capacity of the structure.
As an interim measure Temporary Vertical Concrete Barriers were installed within the hardshoulder of the M5 Southbound to prevent accidental loading by HGVs.
The proposed works comprised of heat straightening of the deformed beam. This technique has been used on a number of other Highways Agency structures and provides a cost effective method of restoring the capacity of the structure with minimum disruption to road users.
The scheme started on 11 June 2007 and was completed on 13 July 2007. The works were werecarried out overnight during a two week period. Closures affected the Southbound M5 off slip and the southern side of the roundabout. .
Liaison was carried out with the adjacent supermarket with regard to closure of the exit to their car park and procedures was put in place to ensure that emergency access was maintained for vehicles exiting the Fire Station.
