The Project
The A49 is single carriageway which starts at Ross-on-Wye (M50 Junction 4 / A40) in the south and extends to Shrewsbury (A5) in the north. The scheme is located approximately 5 miles north of Leominster and runs alongside the grounds of Berrington Hall, a National Trust Property. The scheme is approximately 2.3km long with daily traffic flows in 2005 of 9,121 vehicles (two way) of which 19.0% are LGV’s.
The Problem
The existing road surface was showing signs of failure and extensive patching has already taken place in order to maintain a safe running surface. There was also minimal drainage at this site and this will be upgraded with a new system.
Works Information
The work involved the resurfacing of 2.3km of the carriageway, removal and replacement of the existing kerbing.
Following extensive discussions with the National Trust, we also constructed a new drainage system outside of the highway boundary.
Project Dates - Updated May 2007
Work started on Monday 21 May 2007 and is expected to be completed on 16 November 2007.
