Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How much will the scheme cost?

A. £44.4m.

Q. Will the viaduct be replaced on-line or off-line?

A. On-line replacement

Q. Are you widening the viaduct?

A. Yes. Current safety standards require wider verge and safe widths for maintenance. The road width and traffic capacity of the A34 will not change.

Q. Why isn’t the opportunity being taken to widen the road?

A. This is a maintenance project to replace the existing vi aduct. It is not the Agency’s intention to widen the A34.

Q. Will the junction at Pear Tree be improved?

A. Minor amendments will be made to the merge to improve access to the A34 only.

Q. Will the sub-standard sliproads be improved?

A. The scheme has an improved merge.

Q. Will the sliproads be closed during construction?

A. The sliproads will be open during construction except for brief overnight periods when it will be necessary to set up traffic management.

Q. Will the A40 headroom be improved?

A. Yes. We intend to increase the headroom to the current standard of 5.1m.

Q. Will a quieter road surface be used?

A. Yes.

Q. Will there be speed limits during the works?

A. Yes. Reduced speed limits will improve safety for the workforce and for road users and therefore safety cameras will be deployed.

Q. Will additional road lighting be required?

A. The slip road is currently lit at the Pear Tree roundabout to current standards and no additional lighting will be provided.

Q. Will you build noise fencing?

A. No. Noise levels at all locations are likely to decrease as a result of quieter surfacing.

Q. Will the Oxford Canal be drained during construction?

A. There are no plans to drain the canal.

Q. Will the canal be closed to boats?

A. No. There will however be overnight closures when the viaduct is demolished/bridge slid into place. These will normally be at the weekend.

Q. Will the railway be closed during construction?

A. Yes, but only briefly. Railway possessions are limited by Network Rail to 8 hours on a Saturday night only so as not to impact on rail traffic.

Q. What will the new structure look like?

A. It will be similar in appearance to the existing bridge but with fewer supporting piers.

Q. Will there be new planting?

A. Yes. The new embankments, and where vegetation is removed in the works areas, will be planted with native species wherever possible and a mix suitable to fit in with the wider setting.

Q. Will there be any effect on air quality?

A. No

Q. Is there likely to be an increased flood risk in the area?

A. No, there will be no net impact due to the creation of flood compensation areas to mitigate any loss of floodplain. A full Flood Risk Assessment has been undertaken in consultation with the Environment Agency. it concludes that the scheme will not increase the risk of flooding on or off site in accordance with EA requirements.

Q. Will the new viaduct be more visually intrusive?

A. Not in the long term. Initially, vegetation on the approach and embankments will be lost to construction but this will be replaced when the work is completed and once this matures it will look much as it does now.
