About the Scheme
About the Scheme
The current proposal is for an on-line replacement of the existing viaduct. It will involve demolition of the existing viaduct in phases as follows:
- Phase1 - construct a new temporary deck Southbound to the east of the existing structure
- Phase 2 - demolish and remove the existing deck Northbound
- Phase 3 - construct the new deck Northbound and demolish and remove the existing deck Southbound
- Phase 4 - slide the new deck Southbound into position.
Traffic Management
The new viaduct will be wider than the existing structure, because current safety standards require wider verge and safe widths for maintenance. However the road width and capacity of the A34 will not change, with two lanes of traffic in each direction constructed to current safety standards. The scheme also involves minor alterations to the south facing slip roads at the Peartree interchange to improve access to and egress from the A34, and to improve safety levels.
We intend that the A34 will be open to normal traffic throughout the construction period. It may be necessary to restrict traffic flow for limited periods overnight and at weekends. There will be limited overnight closures of the slip roads to effect tie-ins and surfacing, with clearly signed alternative routes displayed.
