The Project

A scheme to improve safety on the A1(M) northbound at Junction 6 was completed on Friday 30th March 2007.

The A1 (M) northbound is a 3 lane carriageway but at junction 6 it reduces to 2 lanes. Previous markings and signs meant that as the carriageway goes from 3 lanes to 2 lanes, lane 1 was lost leaving lane 2 and 3 continuing past junction 6 of the A1(M).

The old highway marking arrangement forced slower traffic in lane 1 to merge with the faster traffic in lanes 2 & 3 which caused congestion. It also meant that many HGV’s using lane 1 of the carriageway had to move into lane 2 which caused side swipe incidents.

To prevent this from happening and improve safety we have implemented a new layout and signs.  The road now merges from lane 3 to lane 2, but instead of lane 1 being lost lane 3 will be lost. Please see the 'Diagrams' page for a diagram of the new layout.

This means that HGV’s no longer have to switch lanes. Instead traffic from lane 3 merges into lane 2.  We have also improved the safety fence and pavement in the area.
