Reason for the project

When constructed in the 1960's, this section of the M1 (between J21 and J21a) was designed to carry up to 67,000 vehicles per day. Current traffic surveys show that this section of the M1 now carries up to 153,000 vehicles per day.

Significant traffic growth is expected to occur over the coming years, creating an increase in congestion that will force users to find alternative and less suitable routes. It is therefore clear that something needs to be done to improve the flow of traffic, provide more reliable journeys and reduce the amount of congestion for road users.

Widening the M1 is one of a number of transportation improvements recommended by the M1 North South Movements in the East Midlands Multi-Modal Study. This report was published by the Government Office for the East Midlands and accepted by the Government in 2002.

The construction of the M1 scheme will deliver the recommended improvements to ease congestion, increase safety and provide more reliable journey times.
