The Project
The work consists of the construction of an emergency crossing point, and two turn-around points (one on each carriageway).
The crossing point will be in the form of a gated barrier on wheels. In an emergency situation, upon directions from the Police, trained operatives would open the barrier to allow vehicles trapped on one carriageway behind an incident to cross to the other carriageway.
Vehicles will be able to turn around before going through the crossing point. A lay-by on the southbound carriageway will be modified for this purpose and on the northbound carriageway a nearby junction will be used to turn around.
A hardened area within the central reserve is being extended so it can accommodate the vehicle movements. Short sections of the continuous barrier will be removed, and replaced with the gated barrier, which will be able to withstand impacts in the same way as a normal central reserve barrier.
The work will start on 10 March 2007 and will take place overnight between 20:00 to 06:00 weekdays and at daytimes between 08:00 to 18:00 at weekends. The work should be completed in approximately 2 weeks later.
Traffic Management
There will be a temporary 50mph speed in force at all times during the works. Also there will be full closure of lane 1 & 2, at different times, depending on whether the work is in the central reserve or the lay-by.
