The Project
Where
Work was undertaken on the M5 northbound carriageway between Junctions 2 - Oldbury and Junction 1 - West Bromwich.
Works are currently in 2 phases:
- Phase 1 started on 6 March 2007 and was completed ahead of schedule on 28 March 2007
- Phase 2 started on 9 July 2007 and was completed on 4 August 2007
What are we doing
Phase 1
We have resurfaced areas of lane 1, 2, and 3 of the northbound carriageway over a distance of approximately 3 km. We also installed new traffic movement loops and upgraded the road markings.
Phase 2
We have renewed the asphalt expansion joints where they are worn out and installed new ones where the new surface has been laid.
Why do we need to do this work
The carriageway had reached the end of its useful life and can no longer be repaired economically by patching works. These works removed the need for potholing or patching works and provides a safe surface for road users.
Traffic Management
Works were carried out using nightime lane closures for the safety of both road users and road workers. There was a single lane left open to traffic during the works with a 50mph speed limit. When we were working near the northbound entry slip road at Junction 2 it was necessary to close this slip road and traffic was diverted via Junction 3. In addition, when we was working near to Junction 1 northbound exit slip road it was necessary to close this slip road and traffic was diverted via Junction 3 and when we was working near to Junction 1 northbound exit slip road it was necessary to close the slip road and traffic was diverted via Junction 7 of the M6.
