The Project
Engineers working for the Highways Agency used a special machine containing hundreds of tiny metal balls, which are blasted at high pressure into the surface of the A21, to roughen the texture to improve tyre grip, therefore reducing braking distances and improving safety.
Traffic on the road had smoothed the surface and the Agency, which operates motorways and all trunk roads in England, needed to remedy the situation. The work took place overnight between Sevenoaks and Baldsow in Kent starting on Monday, 5 March and was finished by the end of March.
