The Project
The Highways Agency has carried out work to upgrade the existing pedestrian crossing on the A259 at Little Common, Bexhill, in East Sussex.
The old pelican crossing has been turned into a puffin crossing which has a standard traffic light sequence with a flashing amber stage. The improvement will give pedestrians more time to cross the road safely.
The new puffin crossing has a sensor to identify pedestrians waiting at the traffic lights. This allows the crossing to respond quickly to people wanting to cross. When a pedestrian reaches the other side, the traffic lights turn green, reducing the waiting time for drivers at the crossing.
