The Project

Where

Work to repair and provide protection to eight concrete supporting crossbeams which effectively take the weight of the M5 above Stone Street started on 4 June 2007 and will last for 72 weeks.

History

Oldbury viaduct forms part of The Midland Links Motorway Viaducts which were built in the 1970’s and comprises 21km of elevated section of motorway. The “Midland Links” are regularly maintained and these sections of the motorway at Oldbury are now due for maintenance works to ensure their ongoing stability and safety.

The Work To Be Carried Out

The work is to repair and provide protection to eight concrete supporting crossbeams which effectively take the weight of the M5 above.  This will be done as follows:

  • Steel trestles are erected around the existing columns
  • Steel beams are erected on the trestles to support the crossbeams enabling the repair work to be undertaken safely
  • The concrete crossbeams will be repaired section by section
  • Cathodic protection will be applied to the newly repaired crossbeams.  (Cathodic protection is a process of introducing a low voltage electrical current to the whole beam through a specialised paint which halts the corrosion of the steelwork inside).
  • The steel suppot beams and trestles will then be removed.

During The Works

Beneath the motorway one lane of Stone Street will be closed for the duration of the works to ensure safety for the workforce and the travelling public as the structural supports are very close to the road.

Nightime closures will be required on both Stone Street and Park Street to allow erection of the supporting steelwork.

Working hours will be Monday – Friday  8 a.m. – 6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.  It may be necessary on rare occasions to work outside these hours but every effort will be made to keep these to a minimum.  On occasion there may be noise generated by the work but this will also be kept to a minimum.

There will be no traffic management on the M5
