Markham Moor Junction Improvement
Background
The work we are carrying out to improve the existing Markham Moor roundabout on the A1 commenced in April 2007. This work is part of the £84 million improvement project to upgrade six roundabouts on the A1 between Blyth and Peterborough.
Upgrading Markham Moor roundabout to a new two-level junction, which will improve safety and ease congestion by separating A1 traffic from local traffic.
Why is the improvement needed?
Markham Moor roundabout (A57/A638 & B1164) has a poor accident record with 68 personal injury accidents occurring between 2001 and 2005. The roundabout suffers frequently from congestion and lengthy delays during peak hours.
What will the new improvements consist of?
We will replace the existing roundabout with a new two level junction, with new roundabouts and slip roads located on either side of the existing A1. The new roundabout on the east side of the A1 will connect new southbound slip roads to the A638 and A57. The new roundabout on the west side of the A1 will connect new northbound slip roads to the B1164 and Milton Road. The new roundabouts will be connected together by a new bridge across the A1. The main carriageway south of the junction will be realigned to fit with the scheme.
What's happened so far?
We erected a crane in the middle of the existing roundabout and constructed the supports (abutments) for the new bridge. We delivered the bridge deck beams to site, joined them into pairs and lifted them onto the new bridge abutments. We completed all of these works within the boundary of the existing roundabout enabling existing traffic flows to be maintained.
We completed excavation and earth moving works on the south side of the junction and installed new main carriageway drainage. This involved excavating and moving 90,000 tonnes of material. We used this material on the east side of the A1 to create a slip road embankment and for the new roundabout.
We demolished the Total filling station on the east side of the A1 to enable construction of the southbound off slip road. We also constructed a temporary road to maintain access to businesses operating in this area.
On the west side of the A1 we improved the ground to enable construction of the new northbound off slip road and new west roundabout.
What work is currently being carried out?
We are constructing the deck of the new bridge in the middle of the existing Markham Moor roundabout and progressing works 'off-line' to the sides of the main A1 carriageway. We are completing ground improvements to enable construction of the new sections of A1 main carriageway.
On the east side of the A1 we are building a new link road for the A57 and building the new roundabout. We are reusing a redundant section of the old A57 to maintain a link between the A57 and A638 while construction of the new link roads takes place.
On the west side of the A1 we are temporarily widening the B1164 Great North Road to Tuxford. This will enable us to maintain traffic flows on the B1164 while we construct the new section of link road to the new roundabout.
Environment & Ecology
We have carried out regular environmental and ecological surveys on site. We have moved Pyramidal orchids located within the works area to a new site. We removed trees and hedges in the works area prior to the nesting season to avoid disturbing birds and other wildlife.
