The Project

Two bridge replacements have taken place between junctions 4a and 6 of the M3 - near Basingstoke, Hampshire. Both the Scotland Farm bridleway bridge and the Hatch footbridge were demolished overnight on 14th-15th July. The replacement bridges were then installed overnight on 11th-12th August.

The new bridges improve safety by providing further headroom clearance on the motorway and greater resistance to vehicle collision.

Traffic Management

The maintenance works mainly involved hardshoulder closures on the M3, with some overnight lane closures as necessary.

Both the demolition and installation of the new bridges, however, required a full overnight closure of the M3 between junctions 4a and 6. This was necessary to provide a safe environment for both our workforce and the traveling public.

Drivers followed a signed diversion route route during this closure.

Project Timetable

  • Saturday 14th - Sunday 15th July: Both bridges demolished (overnight closure).
  • Saturday 11th - Sunday 12th August: Installation of new bridges (overnight closure).
