Carpenter's Lodge Junction Improvement
Why is the improvement needed?
Carpenter’s Lodge roundabout has a poor accident record with 58 personal injury accidents between 1998 and 2003. Additionally, the junction suffers frequently from congestion and lengthy delays during peak hours.
What's happened so far?
We held a draft Orders Exhibition in March 2005, at St John’s Church in Stamford, followed by a Public Inquiry in November 2005, at the Lady Anne’s Hotel in Stamford. Orders have been made and we are now ready to start work on site.
What will the improvements consist of?
We will replace the existing roundabout with a new two-level compact junction. This will consist of a new overbridge built to the north of the existing roundabout with new on and off slip roads to the A1. In addition to this we will improve the northbound off-slip road to Racecourse Road, widening and realigning it.
How will we manage traffic?
We will carry out most of the work in the fields surrounding the existing junction. This will not disrupt traffic on the existing A1. However, it will be necessary to use narrow lanes on the A1 for safe and efficient construction of the improvement works. Where possible, work on the A1 will take place during off-peak hours to minimise disruption to road users.
What provisions will we make for pedestrians and cyclists?
We will maintain access through the works for pedestrians and cyclists at all times, although arrangements will vary as the works progress.
What preparation have we done so far?
We undertook surveys on site in 2004 to identify, excavate and record any archaeological finds. We will continue to monitor the site as works progress in case any evidence is uncovered.
We also undertook environmental surveys to identify habitats, plants and wildlife which could be affected by the works.
Site clearance works will include moving some hedgerows and removing some trees and hedges. We will complete this prior to the main works to avoid disturbing birds during their nesting season.
We will continue environmental monitoring of the site as works progress.
