Colsterworth Junction Improvement
Why is the improvement needed?
Colsterworth roundabout has a poor accident record with 25 personal injury accidents occurring between 1998 and 2003. Additionally, the junction suffers frequently from congestion and lengthy delays during peak hours.
What's happened so far?
We held a draft Orders Exhibition in September 2005, followed by a Public Inquiry in March 2006, at Sir Isaac Newton Memorial Hall in Colsterworth. Orders have been made and we are now ready to start work on site.
What will the improvements consist of?
The works at Colsterworth are in two separate areas, at the roundabout to the south of Colsterworth (A151/B676) and at the B6403 junction to the north of Colsterworth.
The Colsterworth North (B6403 junction) improvement works involve constructing a new overbridge and link road to connect Bridge End and High Dyke and local junction improvements where the existing B6403 meets the A1.
The Colsterworth South (A151/B676) junction improvement works consist of constructing a new two-level compact junction to replace the existing roundabout. The new overbridge and link road will form a semi-circular connection between the A151 and B676. Mini roundabouts will be constructed at the link road’s junctions with the A151 and B676. Junction improvements will be completed locally where the A151 and B676 meet the A1.
How will we manage traffic?
We will carry out most of the work in the fields surrounding the existing junction. This will not disrupt traffic on the existing A1. Where possible, work on the A1 will take place during off-peak hours to minimise disruption to road users. However, some work will require us to establish a contraflow system and operate single-lane running in both directions. This will increase congestion temporarily, especially during peak hours.
What provisions will we make for pedestrians and cyclists?
We will maintain access through the works for pedestrians and cyclists at all times, although arrangements will vary as the works progress.
What preparation have we done so far?
We undertook surveys on site in 2004 to identify, excavate and record any archaeological finds. We will continue to monitor the site as works progress in case any evidence is uncovered.
We also undertook environmental surveys to identify habitats, plants and wildlife which could be affected by the works.
Site clearance works will involve the removal of some trees and hedges. We will complete this prior to the main works to avoid disturbing birds during their nesting season.
We will continue environmental monitoring of the site as works progress.
