The Project
Where
The scheme is located at the A5/A49/A5112 junction known as Bayleys Roundabout.
When
Work started on 14 January 2008 and was completed on the 17 April 2008.
What we did?
The scheme comprised the design and construction of traffic signals on the four main approaches to the roundabout from A5 (eastbound and westbound), A49 northbound and A5112 southbound and on the circulatory carriageway at the above 4 locations.
Amendments to the road markings to provide three lanes on A5 westbound, A49 northbound and A5112 southbound approaches and an additional circulatory lane on the south side of the roundabout.
Surfacing of the circulatory carriageway of the roundabout and high friction surfacing of the same and also all of the carriageways joining the roundabout.
Road markings including new spiral markings on the circulatory carriageway. Road signs on the various approaches to the roundabout.
New grasscrete layby (concrete grid filled with soil and seeded - making a hard standing) on the roundabout for ease of maintenance of the traffic signal controller located in the central island.
The old pedestrian / cyclist crossing on the A5 westbound approach to the roundabout was relocated. New lengths of pedestrian barrier was installed.
Why did we need to do this work?
These works were being implemented to reduce congestion at this junction of the A5 and A49 trunk roads and the A5112 Shropshire County Council road, by the installation of traffic signals controlled by the MOVA (Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation) system. The traffic signals will continually optimise the green times to make the junction better able to cope with both daily and seasonal variation in traffic flow. Validation of the MOVA was undertaken before the traffic signals became live.
