The Project
The original Blackhorse Footbridge was constructed in 1971, and did not meet current safety standards. The bridge was demolished in June 2007 and replaced with a modern, low maintenance structure. The new structure features improved safety for users with higher parapets, improved surfacing and shallower ramp gradients for easier access by the mobility impaired.
The new bridge structure was installed in August 2007, completing the Highways Agency’s section of the project. The bridge remains temporarily closed, as the north extension is being constructed as part of the ongoing Wilchelstowe development. Work on the extension is due to commence early 2008.
An environmental statement for the bridge extension was published and a summary can be viewed via the publications page.
Any questions in connection with the environmental statement should be addressed to ken.dant@highways.gsi.gov.uk
