The Project

The Orwell Bridge is located southeast of Ipswich and carries the A14 trunk road over the River Orwell estuary. The A14 is the main route for traffic to and from the port of Felixstowe.

The bridge consists of two independent post tensioned concrete box girders carrying two lanes of the A14 trunk road over the River Orwell estuary. Each box is supported by spherical bearings that allow expansion or contraction of the bridge deck during extreme temperatures. Some of the bearings have reached the end of their serviceable life and now need to be replaced.

The work affected the Orwell Bridge westbound carriageway only.

When was the work done

Work started on 4 June 2007 and was completed at the end of November 2007.
