Construction Progress

Construction Progress

Work started on the scheme on 15 November 2006 and the bypass is expected to be open to traffic in late October/early Novemeber.

We are making steady progress on the scheme despite the bad weather last summer and July/August this year.

We opened the new roundabout to the east of Dobwalls village on 22 October 2007. This has allowed us to remove the existing traffic lights at the A38/A390 junction which were one of the main causes of congestion in Dobwalls village.

Railway Bridge

Railway Bridge

We are close to completing the new bridge on the A390 over the London - Penzance rail line. The arches are now in position and have been concreted together and water proofed. Placing the material to form the approach embankments next to the structure is ongoing at a controlled level of 1 metre rise per week.

Work has also started on the installation of drainage ducts along the new embankment to the South of the railway arches.

Bat Bridges

Bat Bridge

We are using the Dobwalls Bypass to pilot the use of special structures to help bats find their way across the new road. This is just one of a series of measures to reduce the environmental impact of the new road.

The new "bat bridges" consist of a metal structure with wires and mesh stretched in a u-shape. They replace the profile of the hedgerows and trees that bats previously followed using echo location to find their way to and from their roosts and their foraging areas. The bats can now follow the structures at a safe height above the traffic. The pilot project involves monitoring the structures for a period of five years to measure how successful this technique has been.

Moorswater Collector Distributor Road

The Moorswater Collector Distributor Road opened in February 2008. The existing A38 traffic has been diverted on to the Distributor Road while the construction of the new dual carriageway takes place. The diversion will remain in use until the new bypass is opened this autumn.
