Wildlife

The site runs through a number of areas that are important for wildlife, including Shorne and Ashenbank Wood SSSI. We have been working closely with ecologists to ensure that the effects on these areas are kept to a minimum. This has involved off-site works to improve the condition of the SSSI in consultation with Natural England, such as recoppicing areas of sweet chestnut woodland and habitat creation.

Mitigation works have been carried out to ensure that protected species including badgers, bats, great crested newts, dormice and reptiles are not harmed during the works.

We have also moved some fish that had found their way into one of the highway drainage ponds.

Noise

We are working closely with the Environmental Health Officers at Gravesham Borough Council and Dartford Borough Council to agree working hours and methods. Regular noise monitoring is carried out to ensure that we stay within the agreed limits.

Where possible we aim to carry out works within normal working hours, but sometimes works can only be carried out at night or over weekends for safety reasons.

Dust

We have a series of measures in place to control dust during earthworks.

Damping with water is the most effective; we use up to 240,000 litres per day mixed with a wetting agent called “dustbuster” to make haul roads stay wet for longer.

Waste and Recycling

We have crushed and reused concrete, brick and tarmac from demolition of buildings and removal of the old carriageway. We aim to minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill and over 60% of the waste sent off site is processed and recovered for recycling.

300 tonnes of woodchip from vegetation clearance has been sent offsite and burnt as biomass to generate heat and energy for an industrial park in Slough.
