2007 Proposals

Background

Introduction

We are proposing to improve the A453 from Junction 24 of the M1 to Farnborough Road, Clifton. Our main objectives are to reduce congestion and improve safety for motorists and nonmotorised users such as pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders in the area.

We held a Public Exhibition in September 2004 to present our preliminary proposals for the scheme. We have since developed these proposals in more detail and we would now like your views on the changes we have made.

Background

Why the improvement is needed

The A453 east of the M1 is a major route between Nottingham, the M1 and East Midlands Airport and forms part of the national strategic road network. The existing road is severely congested at peak hours, with unreliable journey times, has a poor safety record and poses maintenance difficulties.

The Multi-Modal Study commissioned by the Government Offi ce for the East Midlands reported in August 2002 and recommended the dualling of the rural section of the A453 from M1 Junction 24 to Clifton and the widening of the carriageway through Clifton to a four-lane single carriageway.

The recommendation was endorsed by the Regional Planning Body and now forms part of the Regional Transport Strategy. The Secretary of State for Transport gave his support to the A453 Widening scheme by including it in the Government’s Targeted Programme of Improvements on 18 May 2004. The improvement scheme is one of the highest transport priorities in the East Midlands region.
