The Project
Maintenance work to paint two sign gantries over the southbound carriageway of the A38 at and on the approach to the A516 southbound exit slip road, near Mickleover, Derbyshire, was carried out in August 2007. The work started on the evening of Monday, 30 July.
The work was essential to maintain the protective coating on the sign gantries, preventing possible structural deterioration and avoiding the increased costs and disruption associated with carrying out a more extensive repair later. Because of the position of the gantries, one of which spans the junction of the A38 and A516 southbound, the work was carried out under a combination of slip road, single lane and full southbound carriageway closures on the A38 and A516. Diversions applied, but the routes were local and well signed using A38, A50 and A516.
Traffic Management
In order to minimize disruption to traffic, the work was carried out over consecutive nights from 9pm to 6am when traffic flows were at their lowest.
There were seven closures of the A516 southbound exit slip road at Mickleover followed by seven closures of the A38 southbound between the A516 Mickleover and the Findern Lane (formerly A5250) junctions.
Lane three of the northbound A38 adjacent to the gantries was also closed for safety reasons on seven of the nights and there was a temporary 50 mph speed limit on the southbound carriageway through the works.
When the A516 slip road was closed, traffic was diverted south on the A38 to the A50 at the Toyota island, then west on the A50, rejoining the A516 at Hilton.
When the A38 southbound was closed, traffic was diverted on to the A516 southbound to the A50 at Hilton, east on the A50 to the Toyota island then north on the A38 to the Findern Lane junction.
