The Project
We have resurfaced 6 miles of the A14 between the M1/M6 Junction and Junction 1 (near Welford). Work started on Monday 16 July and was completed in mid-September 2007.
The existing road surface had come to the end of its useful working life and both carriageways were resurfaced with a new low noise surfacing material.
All the work was carried out overnight from Monday to Saturday nights. During the day the road remained open as normal.
Traffic Management
Overnight the A14 was closed between the M1/M6 Junction and Junction 2 (A508 at Kelmarsh) in one direction at a time depending on which carriageway was being resurfaced.
When the A14 was closed, clearly signed diversion routes were in place. Long distance traffic going west on the A14 heading towards the M1 and M6 was diverted off the A14 at Junction 13 (Thrapston) and down the A45 to the M1 at Junction 15 at Northampton. Traffic going east followed the same diversion route in the opposite direction. The A14 was kept open as far as Junction 2 for local traffic but Junction 1 was closed every night of the works.
The work was programmed to be carried out in the shortest possible time and designed to keep disruption to a minimum.
