 The Project

The Highways Agency is currently undertaking essential bridge upgrade works on the M4 between Junctions 5-7. The works are programmed to finish in Spring 2010, weather permitting.

The scheme will upgrade elements of the following bridges;

  • Chalvey Interchange Bridges,
  • Both east and west Prince of Wales Bridge,
  • Chalvey Culvert Bridge,
  • Windsor Branch railway Bridge.

Key work includes renewing the bridge parapets, renewing the safety fence and waterproofing the bridge decks. A hard shoulder will also be added to either side of the Chalvey East and West Interchange Bridges and the Prince of Wales Bridge, and between the Chalvey East and West Interchange bridges.

Once complete, the scheme will ensure the bridges are maintained to a safe and serviceable condition for the next 25 years. The new parapet will ensure both sides of the bridges comply with current safety standards, increasing their strength to reduce the severity of a vehicle impact, while the waterproofing will protect the bridges from corrosion.

This section of the M4 will be provided with a continuous hard shoulder for roadusers to utilise as a refuge when needed in emergencies. This will also allow for improved traffic management for any maintenance requirements in the future.

Traffic Management

140,000 vehicles use the M4 every day. The works have been designed to keep traffic moving at all times.

The majority of the works will be undertaken weekdays, during daytime hours.

Some works, which may require lane closures, will be carried during night time hours.

  • Two miles (3km) of the M4, both east and westbound between junctions 5 and 7 will be affected.
  • Our traffic management, including narrow lanes, will be in place at all times whilst the scheme is underway.
  • There will be three lanes open both east and westbound during peak hours but with a 50mph speed limit in force.  The flow of traffic is expected to run smoothly and road users should experience minimal delay.
  • There will be lane reductions at the M4 Junction 6 Interchange roundabout at some point during the scheme.
