The Project

We undertook maintenance works to the A303 between the junction with the A34 at Bullington Cross and the M3 at Junction 8. The work took place overnight between 10.00pm and 6.00am to minimise delays to the travelling public, as well as for the safety of the work crews.

The westbound carriageway was closed between those locations from Monday 24th to Sunday 30th September. The eastbound carriageway was closed between those locations from Monday 1st to Sunday 7th October.

The full closures of the carriageway allowed us to undertake a wide variety of work that will be of ongoing benefit to the road user, consisting of:

• Resurfacing
• Drainage and gulley clearance
• Sweeping and litter picking
• White lining and road markings
• Safety inspections
• Vegetation-cutting
• Bridge joint repairs
• Bridge deck resurfacing

If undertaken individually these tasks would have required a number of overnight lane or carriageway closures. By completely closing each carriageway on these nights, the tasks were carried out simultaneously, which greatly reduced the disruption to the travelling public.

Traffic Management

During the overnight closures, the following signed diversion routes were in use for drivers:

• A303 westbound traffic was diverted south along the M3 to Junction 9 (Winchester), then onto the A34 northbound to the A34/A303 junction at Bullington Cross.  
• A303 eastbound traffic was diverted south on the A34 to M3 Junction 9, then north to Junction 8.
