Study History

A detailed examination of the problems and issues affecting the M6 corridor between the West Midlands and North West conurbations was carried out by the West Midlands to North West Multi-Modal Study (MidMan).   The 2002 MidMan study report identified a set of guiding objectives, developed scenarios and recommended a package of measures.

In his December 2002 response to the study recommendations, the Secretary of State confirmed that he would like further development work to be carried out on a range of recommended measures, including widening the M6 from J11A to J19 to dual four lanes. The Highways Agency was asked to investigate widening options.

Subsequently Ministers asked the Highways Agency to investigate the option of a tolled M6 Expressway running alongside the M6.  However, this option was rejected in July 2006 by Roads Minster Dr Stephen Ladyman, and no longer forms part of the current M6 J11A-19 study.  A summary of the issues supporting Dr Ladyman’s 2006 announcement can be viewed in the M6 J11A -19 Summary Report (PDF 108KB) and its ANNEX A (PDF 56KB).

The M6 Summary Report explains the 2006 position.  More recent studies and reports such as the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change (October 2006), the Eddington Transport Study (December 2006), and the Nichols Review of the Highways Agency's Major Roads Programme (March 2007) influence the context within which further examination of M6 widening and hard shoulder running options will be carried out.
