The current M6 study work is considering in outline the cost, environmental impact and economic value of widening and hard shoulder running. It should be recognised that different lengths of the M6 may lend themselves to different "solutions" to take account of differing circumstances and pressures. The study will also examine whether it may be appropriate to change the way in which more local needs currently served by the M6 might be met.

The long-term objective is to broadly achieve the objectives identiifed by the MidMan Study and to ensure that the M6 retains an effective role as one of the country’s major transportation routes.
