Progress Photos
Photo 1: Access paths to a MS4 message sign location
The photo below shows one of the completed access paths to a MS4 message sign location. It also shows how the severity of the embankment slope required a retaining wall to support the path, with handrails being installed to safeguard engineers who access the platform.
Photo 2: Motorway Incident Detection System (MIDaS) Loops
Part of the upgrade of the M4 NMIS project is to install Motorway Incident Detection System (MIDaS) Loops. In the photo below we see a set of the "loops" cut into the carriageway surface across all three lanes. Each loop has a coil of cable beneath the surface that is capable of detecting the presence and speed of vehicles passing on the lane. This data is then passed into the message sign control systems and enables the MS4s to automatically inform the traveller of any delays or incidents ahead of them.
