Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the work happening?

At the junction of the A47 and the C539 Mattishall Road near Honingham west of Norwich, Norfolk.

Why is it necessary?

The location of the junction means it is quite difficult for drivers turning right onto the A47 to see traffic approaching from the Norwich direction. Over the past few years there have been several accidents, some of which have been severe and, in one case, fatal.  Many of these accidents involved vehicles turning right out of the junction.

What is being done?

As a short term safety improvement, vehicle activated warning signs which are triggered by vehicles on the A47 were installed at the Mattishall Road junction in September 2007.

This scheme is for the replacement of the existing Mattishall road T-junction with a new roundabout.

In addition:

  • the A47 will be moved slightly towards the junction so that road users  will have a better view of the whole roundabout;
  • the approach to the roundabout from Mattishall Road will be improved;
  • some trees and shrubs will be removed ahead of construction, but additional planting will be provided on completion of the scheme.

The roundabout scheme has been developed in conjunction with Norfolk County Council and Norfolk Constabulary.

How will it affect me?

With all our projects we try to minimise delays to road users. Most of the roundabout construction can be carried out with slight disruption to traffic on the A47 trunk road although it will be necessary to close Mattishall Road for short periods. Work likely to cause significant disruption to traffic on the A47 will be carried out overnight.  There will be a 40 mph speed limit in place during construction for the safety of road users and the workforce.

We will inform local residents and other road users when construction is due to commence by way of advertisements in the local press.  As the scheme progresses we will inform the local media of any road closures or other work likely to affect road users.

When is it being done and how long will it take?

We plan to start construction of the new roundabout in summer 2008 and expect it to be completed by the end of the year. Before the main scheme starts, it will be necessary to clear some vegetation and carry out diversions to underground cables and pipes.  This is likely to be done during the coming winter.
