Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Who?
The Highways Agency is an Executive Agency within the Department for Transport and is responsible for maintaining, operating and improving England’s motorways and Trunk Roads.
The Agency’s managing agent contractor for the A30 and A38 west of Exeter in Devon and Cornwall is AccordMP, and they are responsible for supervising this scheme.
Dean & Dyball Construction are the contractors undertaking the work for the Highways Agency.
Where?
Tolvaddon Bridge forms part of the A30 trunk road as it crosses the A3047 near Camborne. We will also be taking the opportunity to undertake some repairs to Blowinghouse and Gilberts Coombe Viaducts, which also form part of the A30 nearby between Pool and Redruth.
Why is it necessary?
In 2004, during our routine inspections, we found that the concrete and its reinforcing steel in the Tolvaddon bridge decks were showing signs of deterioration. Some of the tensioning cables are corroded, and the concrete contaminated. Further studies resulted in the conclusion that the only cost effective solution would be to replace the decks completely.
What are we doing?
We will replace the two bridge decks of Tolvaddon Interchange whilst maintaining 2 lanes of traffic in each direction on the A30 for the majority of the project. This will be achieved by building a temporary bridge for traffic to use on the north side of road.
The safety barrier and street lighting system will also be upgraded to the latest standards during this scheme.
The Gilberts Coombe and Blowinghouse Viaducts will receive treatment to avoid similar corrosion occurring in the ducts which carry the tensioning cables.
When will we be doing the work?
We plan to carry out the work between October 2007 and Winter 2008.
Any works on the main carriageway will be suspended over the Christmas and Easter periods and the May bank holidays.
How will it affect me?
There will be very little disruption of trunk road traffic at Tolvaddon, with the minor exception of the occasions when traffic is switched between the permanent and temporary bridges.
- The A3047 beneath Tolvaddon Bridge will be subject to occasional overnight and weekend closures to allow the demolition of the bridge deck above.
- For Gilberts Coombe and Blowinghouse viaducts, there will be some lane closures and a short period of contra flow but this will be kept to a minimum by 24 hour working.
- The traffic management measures will be well publicised in the local media, and by advanced warning signs on the road.
- The Gilberts Coombe and Blowinghouse Viaducts will be subject to some lane closures
- There will be a 50mph speed limit in force for the duration of the project.
- We apologise for any inconvenience to motorists or residents, and assure you that we will complete the works as soon as possible.
