The Project
This essential maintenance project is taking place on a 2.5km length of the A40 between Over and Highnam roundabouts (between the junctions with the A48 and A417). It includes a complete reconstruction of the road surface, drainage improvements, and total replacement of the existing street lighting in order to provide a safer, more reliable surface for road users. It is anticipated that construction will last for up to 26 weeks, and is due to be completed on the 1 November 2008.
While this work is being carried out, a new bus lane is being incorporated into the road layout eastbound from the B4215 junction to the A417, improving public transport links into Gloucester. The bus lane is part of Gloucestershire County Council's Local Transport Plan, and was originally planned to be delivered in around 2010. By bringing forward the construction of the bus lane and incorporating it into the maintenance scheme, we are reducing future disruption to this important section of the network. By reducing the width of the central reserve this new bus lane will added to the road layout in addition to the existing dual carriageway, so current vehicle capacity will not be reduced.
Traffic Management
The work currently taking place on the 'eastbound' side of the dual carriageway is on schedule to be completed by the bank holiday weekend in August 2008.
The traffic management will be removed overnight on Thursday 21 August 2008 to allow two lanes in each direction over the weekend, although the crossing points will remain closed.
The contraflow will be reinstated during the night of Monday 25 August and Tuesday 26 August 2008, to allow work to commence on the 'westbound' side of the carriageway.
No right turns across the carriageway will be available while the contraflow is in place, however businesses along the route remain open and can be accessed from the nearside lane of the contraflow.
