The Project

Although the alterations to the layout of junction 7 of the eastbound M56, which were introduced in September 2007, improved the situation for traffic merging from the A556, it was clear from the outset that the increased delays for mainline traffic meant that the layout was not working as it was intended to do.

We now intend to restore the main carriageway to three lanes.  This will mean we will have to remove the free flow filter lane from the merge from the A556.  This will be replaced by a long auxiliary merge lane, which involves using a section of the hard shoulder as a running lane. Further details of the proposed layouts can be seen via the link at the top of the page.

The scheme will start on 26 August  and will take about four months to complete.  In order to keep delays and disruption to a minimum, the work will be carried out between 8pm and 5am on weekdays and, whenever possible, between 8pm and 7am at weekends.

There will be occasions when full closures of the M56 or the slip roads will be required and, during these times, clearly signed diversions will be in operation.  Maps showing the diversions routes can be seen by visiting the Diversion Map page.  Throughout the period of works, during the night, the entry slip road will be reduced to a single lane up the point of the merge.  There will also be narrow lanes through this section of the motorway.  Drivers should take extra care, as there will also be 50 mph speed restrictions in operation.
