Project Summary

As part of the new Raynesway development, conditional planning permission was given by Derby City council in December 2007 for improving Raynesway Park Junction.

This junction improvement will provide a new dual carriageway link between the A5111 Raynesway and the A6 Alvaston Bypass. This improvement will improve journey time reliability and decrease rush hour congestion.

What we are doing

This junction improvement will involve:

  • Construction of a new two level junction.
  • A roundabout to the north of the new dual carriageway link. This will provide access to a planned development.
  • A signalised roundabout to the south of the link. This will connect to the existing A5111.
  • A link road will be provided between the two roundabouts which will include a junction with Raynesway Park Drive.
  • The existing junction with Curzon Lane will be closed for safety reasons and a new link road will be provided to Curzon Lane from the signalised roundabout.

Project Status

Works commenced on 11 August 2009. The works are estimated to take around 18 months and should be completed by Autumn 2010.

Traffic Management

We will maintain access to Curzon Lane (renamed Belmore Way) and the recycling centre throughout the works. However, we have now closed the gap that allows right turning traffic into and out of  Belmore Way for the duration of the works, and it will remain closed once the work is complete. There is a clearly signed diversion for road users wishing to leave Belmore Way and turn right and similarly traffic wishing to turn right into Belmore Way.

The informal access from Raynesway to the waste recycling centre has also now been closed and a diversion is signed via Raynesway Park Drive.

There will be times when we will need to use narrow lanes and reduce speed limits on the Raynesway and the Alvaston Bypass. This is to better control the flow of traffic and to provide a safer environment for the road users and work force.

Current Works

Phase 5

We have made good progress with work well underway to complete the bridge connecting to the new commercial park.  As part of these works those travelling south have been diverted under the partially completed bridge, whilst those travelling north have continued to use the new slip road on the A5111 to the west of the original road.

Towards the end of July those travelling south to the A6, Alvaston and the commercial park will be diverted onto a new slip road and roundabout.  Traffic for Alvaston will use the new bridge.

Those travelling north will continue to the west of the original road when travelling to Derby or Alvaston.  However, access to the commercial park, A6 south (including M1 south) and A50 will be via the bridge.

Access Raynesway Park Drive will be from the road which links the two roundabouts.

What Happens Next

While we are completing the final stage of works we will be concentrating on the following:

Reconstruct the A6 north and southbound carriageways to run under the bridge;

  • Complete the pedestrian footpaths, cycle routes and verges;
  • Complete the junction landscaping including tree planting and shrubs;
  • Complete the southern roundabout at Raynesway and the installation of the permanent traffic signals.

How long will it take?

This period of work will take 2 months to complete then the junction will officially be opened this autumn.

Pedestrians and Cyclists

Whilst the works are being completed there will still be some temporary pedestrian paths, cycle routes and crossings until the permanent paths are finished.
