The Project
The Highways Agency has improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists wanting to cross the A46 at East Stoke, near Newark, by installing a Puffin crossing.
The crossing features a detector which can tell when people are waiting to cross the road. This means that if someone presses the button but then walks away, the detector will cancel the instruction to change the lights and the A46 traffic will not be stopped unnecessarily.
It also detects if people are still crossing before the lights are due to change back to green and will extend the crossing time.
Highways Agency Project Sponsor Kamaljit Khokhar said:
"This is a welcome safety boost for people in East Stoke whose village is divided by the A46."
