The Project
Where?
These signs were being installed on the M6 motorway on the north side of Birmingham, between Junctions 4 and 12.
When?
Phase 1 of the works started on 17 January 2008 and was completed on 7 March 2008. Phase 2 of the works started on 3 March 2008 and was completed on 31 March 2008.
What are we doing?
Work to install driver location signs on this section of the M6 motorway and associated junction slip and link roads was carried out in 2 phases.
These signs, which are fully visible from adjacent running lanes and spaced at no more than 500 metres on main carriageways and on junction slip and link roads will tell road users which motorway they are driving on, the direction they are travelling in and exactly where they are on these motorways.
Why do we need to do this work?
Driver location signs are being installed as part of the Highways Agency national strategy to reduce traffic delays and improve safety on motorways.
Because drivers will be able to identify their exact locations, when telephoning emergency services, breakdown recovery, or the Highways Agency Regional Control Centre, assistance can be provided more speedily. A faster response to these telephone calls will mean that traffic delays and congestion on the motorway network will be reduced and traffic safety will be improved.
