Driver location signs will be provided in prominent locations, at no more than 500 metre spacings, along motorway verges and on junction slip and link roads.
These signs will provide information, which accurately identifies their locations on the motorway network.
This information will help emergency services, breakdown recovery and the Highway Agency Regional Control Centre to respond to calls for assistance more speedily.
What do the cones do on this scheme?
Cones will be required for the short night time periods, when signs are being installed in verges adjacent to junction slip and link roads, where hardshoulders are not available. At these locations, cones will be required to close nearside lanes, to keep public traffic at a safe distance from workforce operations.
Elsewhere, hardshoulders are available for carrying out the work safely and only minimal coning will be required.
Will the public see cones and no-one working?
No.
What is the reason (for this work)?
In the majority of cases, drivers who break down or need to report a problem on the motorway use mobile phones. Driver location signs will enable them to identify their exact locations accurately.
This will help emergency services, breakdown recovery and the Highway Agency Regional Control Centre to respond to calls for assistance more speedily. As a consequence, traffic delays and congestion on the network will be reduced and traffic safety will be improved.

What would happen if you do not do this work?
Without driver location signs, traffic delays and congestion on the motorway network will increase, because traffic break downs and incidents on the motorway will not be dealt with so speedily.
